The No. 7 Oregon State University baseball team defeated the University of Portland 5-3 in a late-season match at Goss Stadium Tuesday night.
The game was the Beavers’ first at home in May. The team most recently played in Corvallis on April 29 against the rival University of Oregon.
“We pulled it out, which is great, but I still have extremely high expectations for what our guys need to do,” Oregon State head coach Mitch Canham said after the game.
OSU saw a strong start early on when they got Portland’s first three batters out in a row in the first inning, followed quickly by an unearned run from shortstop Aiva Arquette.
The Pilots were quick to respond, and third baseman Zach Toglia hit the only home run of the night into left field.
Due in part to a double-play from both teams in a very short third inning, neither team scored again until the fifth inning. Both designated hitter Gavin Turley and catcher Wilson Weber scored in the bottom of the fifth, taking the lead for the Beavers.
Just like earlier in the night, Portland was able to match OSU’s score, and they saw another run from Toglia along with one from designated hitter Cole Katayama-Stall.
The tie didn’t last long.
Weber, stepping up to the plate second in the seventh inning, hit a huge triple into left field, where the ball bounced off of the wall amidst the loudest cheering of the night from Beaver fans. A train started rolling by the stadium, blowing its horn, which only got the crowd more excited as Weber and second baseman AJ Singer scored runs from two walks.
“(I’m) just hitting the ball hard and finally starting to get in the air a little bit more, which brings some more success, so it’s been good,” Weber said. “We need to win, so when someone has the opportunity to have that hit- I was glad to take it, but someone’s gotta do it.”
Portland never recovered, and again saw the first three batters all receive outs in the final two innings.
Singer helped lead the Beavers offensively with three hits, two runs batted in, and a run for himself. On the defensive end, first baseman Tyce Peterson was credited with 16 putouts, his most ever with the team.
Redshirt freshman pitcher James DeCremer got the start, first of his Beaver career.
“You just kinda show up every day, do your thing, and if they want to start you, they start you,” DeCremer said. “Gotta be ready every day, pretty much.”
Portland and Oregon State last met on April 8, where OSU won 10-6. The two teams were scheduled to meet in Corvallis on May 7, but that game was cancelled. This win brings OSU to a 38-12-1 record.
“There are no stats, right now, from here on out,” Canham said. “No one cares, nor you should ever really care, it’s: did you guys win the game or did you not?”
The Beavers will wrap up their regular season with a three game series at home against Long Beach State University Thursday through Saturday.
