The Beaver Baseball team bashed a single game post-season record four home runs to rout the Sam Houston State Bearkats in an 18-2 victory in the Baton Rouge Regional on Friday night.

The Beavers also set a single-game post-season record in total hits with 22 hits against the Bearkats and were one run shy of breaking the single-game post-season record of 19 runs scored. The Beavers set the single-game post-season record in the 2005 Corvallis Regional against St. John’s University.

The Bearkats broke open the scoring early in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run from third baseman Justin Wishkoski to make the score 2-0. The Beavers responded to the early scoring from Sam Houston State with a three-run home run from outfielder Micah McDowell to make the score 3-2.

Oregon State designated hitter Mason Guerra extended the lead for the Beavers in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to make the score 4-2. Outfielder Gavin Turley extended the lead for the Beavers again on a two-RBI double to make the score 6-2.

The Beavers extended the lead again with a two-run home run from third baseman Mikey Kane to make the score 8-2. McDowell added another run for the Beavers on a sacrifice bunt to make the score 9-2 headed into the top of the fifth inning.

Kane extended the Beavers lead again on an RBI double to make the score 10-2. The Bearkats issued a walk to drive in a run, and Kane hit a sacrifice fly to extend the Beavers lead to 12-2 headed into the top of the seventh inning.

McDowell hit a two RBI single to extend the Oregon State lead, making the score 14-2. Turley hit a three-run home run to extend the lead to 17-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Shortstop Kyle Dernedde scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to make the score 18-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Right-handed pitcher Trent Sellers picked up the win for the Beavers and pitched 7.1 innings against the Bearkats. Sellers gave up three hits and two runs before being relieved by right-handed pitcher Brayden Boisvert in the eighth inning.

After giving up two runs in the first inning, Sellers set down 20 straight batters in a row and earned five strikeouts on 119 pitches. Sellers’ streak ended when he gave up a walk in the eighth inning but stymied the high-powered offense of the Bearkats throughout the game.

Boisvert pitched 0.2 innings and gave up one hit. Right-handed pitcher Victor Quinn relived Boisvert in the ninth inning and pitched 1.0 innings. Sellers, Boisvert, and Quinn only gave up five hits combined in the win against Sam Houston State.

Right-handed pitcher Coltin Atkinson took the loss for the Bearkats and pitched 3.0 innings. Atkinson gave up 11 hits and eight runs before he was relieved by left-handed pitcher Gavi Coldiron in the fourth inning. Coldrion pitched 2.0 innings and gave up four hits and two runs before being relieved by right-handed pitcher Rome Shubert. Shubert pitched 1.0 innings, giving up two hits and two runs. Right-handed pitcher Miles Hellums relieved Shubert in the seventh inning and pitched 0.2 innings. Hellums gave up three hits and five runs before being relieved by right-handed pitcher Jack Driskell. Driskell pitched 1.1 innings, allowed two hits, and gave up one run.

The Beavers advance in the Baton Rouge Regional and will play the host team Louisiana State University Tigers for a spot in the Baton Rouge Regional championship. The last time the Beavers and the Tigers played in a regional was back in the 2018 Corvallis Regional, and the Beavers won both their matchups against LSU.

The game against the Beavers and Tigers will be televised on ESPN2 and is set for a 6:00 pm first pitch time at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
