Lauren Camou and Alexa Gomez Silva are running for student government president and vice president on a platform consisting of sustainability, community unity and uplifting voices.
The Associated Students of Oregon State University ballots opened last week and are set to close on Feb. 28.
Camou is an environmental pre-law student and Gomez Silva is a Spanish and Political Science major on a pre-law track. Camou is currently Presidential Affairs Director at ASOSU.
“The biggest challenge facing OSU students is funding. Students are underpaid, overworked, underfunded, and are facing extremely high tuition rates,” said Camou. “Our administration would address higher education funding by advocating at the state and national level for better federal funding, state funding, university level scholarships and fiscal responsibility and high student wages.”
Both Camou and Gomez Silva are interested in being advocates for students in every aspect of their schooling. They said that fighting for rights of OSU students and fighting to make change is important to them.
“As part of a minority group I know what it is like to walk around campus and not see people who look, or talk like me. It can be quite discouraging but I want to welcome every student with open arms,” said Gomez Silva.
Gomez Silva also said that collaboration with the university administration is a huge part of the job, but that ultimately what they accomplish together will be a matter of the ticket not making promises that they can’t keep.
“Because at the end of the day we will remain truthful and humble to our student body. Releasing news as soon as we can will also be a priority because the students deserve to know what is happening in their educational institution,” Gomez Silva said.
The pair look to make a more sustainable campus, increase student engagement and involvement and make OSU more accessible to its students.
