The Oregon State University softball team fell 4-2 against Rutgers University in their home opener at Kelly Field this Tuesday.
The game remained scoreless for the first two innings until Rutgers scored their first run in the third. They picked up another two runs in the fourth inning, ending the inning up 3-0. Continuing this streak, the Scarlet Knights picked up another run in the top of the fifth inning.
OSU made some major plays in the bottom of the fifth inning from pitcher Logan Hulon and designated hitter Tristian Thompson. Hulon made a quick play to run up to home plate to get a runner out, and Thompson cracked a homer into far left field.
However, the Beavers were unable to continue this momentum and saw two outs in the first two pitches when they went up to bat in the sixth inning. Jada Lewis managed to mark a double and steal a base in the seventh, but neither team got a run in the last two innings.
Lewis led the Beavers with a .385 batting average, along with two hits and one run batted in. Thompson and pitch runner Ella Dardis were the only OSU players to make it across home plate.
Jillian Anderson was Rutgers’ most accurate batter, with a .375 average. Pitcher Ella Harrison is third in the nation for striking opponents out, and was crucial for Rutgers in order to keep OSU at bay.
The Oregon State University softball team declined to comment on the game.
The home opener for the Beavers was originally intended to be played the prior weekend in a series against Sacramento State, but those games were canceled ahead of time due to rain.
The two teams last met on Feb. 22 in California, where Oregon State kept Rutgers scoreless for a 3-0 ballgame.
The Beavers next head to Missoula to face off against the University of Montana in a three-game series beginning on Friday. The team will come back home on April 2 to battle their rivals, the University of Oregon.
