Oregon State infielder Garret Forrester became the first Beaver selected in the third round of the 2023 MLB draft when the Pittsburgh Pirates drafted him with the 73rd overall pick on Monday.
Forrester is the ninth Beaver taken by the Pirates all-time, the most recent Oregon State player drafted by Pittsburgh was infielder Michael Gretler back in the 2018 MLB Draft.
Forrester had a remarkable career with the Beavers hitting for a .326 batting average, 26 home runs, and a .470 on base percentage during his three seasons with the team. In his final collegiate season with Oregon State, Forrester had a batting average of .341, 10 home runs, and a 1.007 on base percentage plus slugging percentage.
Forrester, a 21 year-old Fair Oaks, CA native, earned All-PAC-12 First Team honors in both his sophomore and junior seasons, and was named to the Baton Rouge Regional All-Tournament team in the Beavers recent postseason run.
In addition to these accolades, Forrester will also be remembered for his clutch hitting with the Beavers. The Pirates third-round pick hit three walk-off game winners during his Oregon State career, the most notable being a walk-off home run against Dallas Baptist in the Fort Worth Regional back in 2021.
Forrester’s selection in the 2023 MLB Draft gives Oregon State at least one player drafted in every MLB Draft dating back to 1993.
