Oregon State University junior Travis Bazzana was awarded the Golden Spikes Award for Performance of the Week after a record breaking series v. Washington State University last weekend.
In a stunning display of power hitting against WSU on May 4, Bazzana shattered the Oregon State University single-season home run record, previously held by Jim Wilson for a 42-year period since 1982.
Bazzana’s feat comes as the culmination of a season-long display of batting prowess, leaving baseball fans in awe of his talent exiting the game with a new season home run record of 24, which he made 26 in the same game.
Wilson’s record of 23 home runs was eclipsed by Bazzana’s unceasing attack on opposing pitchers. With each swing of the bat, Bazzana drew closer to engraving his name in baseball history.
Bazzana’s accomplishments go beyond setting a season home run record. As one of the select few players to hit three home runs in a single game, he has cemented his legacy with players such as Andy Jarvis and Jacob Melton. Jarvis also accomplished this against Washington State in 2001, and Melton followed suit against Utah in 2021.
With an upcoming game at UCLA scheduled for Friday, May 10 at 7 p.m., Bazzana looks to continue his relentless assault on the record books and add more home runs to his still-growing record of 26, three more than that of Wilson’s previous record of 23.
