In their debut of the West Coast Conference, the Oregon State Beavers Volleyball team performance could have gone a lot smoother than it did.
After multiple hard-fought sets, the Pepperdine Waves ultimately came out on top 3-1 during Thursday night’s match at Gill Coliseum.
Head coach Lindsey Behonick had no comments on the game following the Beavers loss.
Lauren Rumel led the way with 13 kills in the match, followed closely by Annika Hester with 12. Freshman Emma Lilo led the team with 23 assists.
The Waves were led by Birdie Hendrickson who accumulated 18 kills, while Rosemary Archer created multiple opportunities for her team with 48 assists.
After leading the first half of set one, the Waves rallied behind a few Beaver errors to take the lead and continued to win the set, 25-20.
The second set followed suit, with the same trend happening. The set was tied at 22 apiece before Pepperdine went on a three-point run to end the set. The Beavers were able to hit a lot better this set, as it took them 45 total points to acquire eight kills in the first set, while it only took 22 points to get eight kills in the second set.
The third set saw the crowd roar many times, especially on a Rumel kill to tie the set up at 25. This was followed by a kill by Hester, and a service ace by Vivian Light, who had a service error to end the first set.
The game featured 12 aces, but an astounding 29 serving errors, ten by the Beavers, and 19 by the Waves.
Notably by the Beavers, they excelled at chilling out Waves’ Grace Chillingworth. She has the same amount of attacks as Hendrickson, but seven less kills, and four more errors, hitting only .125 on the game.
The fourth set was close for a few points, as the Beavers climbed to a 5-2 lead. This quickly turned to 5-5, then 5-7. It quickly ended with a score of 25-15.
The Beavers (2-9, 0-1) face off next against the Portland Pilots at 1 pm at the Chiles Center in Portland. The Waves (4-7, 1-0) travel home to face off against Pacific on Saturday.
