Editor’s Note: This story has been updated to correct that this is not the first women’s march Corvallis has held.
The Get Out to Vote Women’s March will be held on the Oregon State campus on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. beginning at Parker’s Plaza, outside of Reser Stadium.
The march will focus on social justice initiatives that impact primarily women and gender rights. Participants can expect to hear speeches, march alongside other activists, and celebrate empowerment. The community will be inclusive to all folks who plan on marching.
Allison Doss, a second-year political science pre-law student at OSU, is the face behind the march.
“I planned my first protest when I was four years old,” Doss said. She has planned around 15 marches, all focusing on gender violence, reproductive rights, and women’s rights. Doss’ largest march, which she organized her junior year of high school, had nearly 350 participants.
There have been women’s marches and representation on the OSU campus in the past, however Doss noticed that nothing was planned for this year, which is why she decided to take the initiative.
The Corvallis women’s march corresponds with the national women’s march, which has been held annually since 2017.
With the election only three days after the march, Doss hopes that college students who see the congregation will be more motivated to vote. She also mentioned that the college age group is traditionally a demographic that votes the least, but that is changing as Generation Z voters have become some of the most active in the polls compared to past generations.
Doss described the march as a celebration that we have the right to assemble and vote as women, noting, “While protesting and marching are very very important, voting is the most important thing.”
