Globally engaged students and faculty should keep an eye out for International Education Week. From Nov. 18-22, there will be a wide variety of opportunities and events to celebrate the impact that international education has on our campus.
International Education Week is a collaborative initiative between the US State Department and the US Department of Education. It is recognized in countless universities and has been celebrated at Oregon State University for over 10 years.
The signature events this year include the President’s reception for international students on Nov. 19 as well as a Provost reception for international faculty on Nov. 21. There will also be the World Languages and Cultures Fair and the Culinary Heritage Celebration.
Other events include a trivia night, an international alumni panel and a passport workshop. Some are geared towards international students and faculty while others are open to all students. More information and specific event details can be found at the OSU events calendar, under the “IEW” tag.
“I love to see all the creative ways that different folks find to engage with International Education Week,” said Julianna Betjemann, Global Affairs associate at Oregon State and central coordinator of International Education Week.
Betjemann encouraged students and faculty to check out the “Whispers of Home” exhibition in The Little Gallery, in room 210 of Kidder Hall. The gallery has had a global theme for years and the current featured artist is graduate student Victory Chiamaka Obieke. The installation will be on display until Dec. 13.
International students and those looking to study abroad might be particularly interested in IEW events, but the ability to engage globally is a critical career skill for all. This webpage provides resources for global career skills for anyone looking for where to start.
“International Education Week is a great time to be thinking about how intercultural competence and global skills are a part of career readiness,” said Betjemann.
