The student senate approved several key incidental fee allocation bills while sending the Associated Students of Oregon State University budget back to mediation following a failed vote on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
During the senate meeting, senators voted to pass Senate Bills 84.21, 84.23, 84.24, 84.25 and 84.26, securing funding for a range of student services. SB 84.21, “FRC Incidental Fee Allocation Bill,” ensures continued financial support for the Family Resource Center, which provides child care assistance and family support programs.
SB 84.23, “SEE Incidental Fee Allocation Bill,” designates funding for Student Experiences and Engagement, helping to sustain student clubs, leadership programs and cultural initiatives.
The senate also approved SB 84.24, “Memorial Union Incidental Fee Allocation Bill,” which allocates funding towards the maintaining and enhancement of the Memorial Union, which includes event spaces, Lanes and Games and other student activities.
SB 84.25, “Performing Arts Incidental Fee Allocation Bill,” passed, reinforcing the financial backing for OSU’s growing performing arts programs. Ensuring student and community access to music, theater and other creative and artistic opportunities. The continuation of low price student tickets for professional events at Patricia Valian Reser Center for the Creative Arts are included within this bill.
Last but not least on the agenda, SB 84.26, “Recreational Sports Fee Allocation Bill,” which supports Recreational Sports, was also approved and secures resources for campus intramural sports and activities, wellness programs and facility upkeep.
However, one major proposal failed to advance. SB 84.20, “ASOSU Incidental Fee Allocation Bill,” which outlined the budget for ASOSU operations and set the incidental fee at $71.89 per student per term for the 2025-2026 academic year, was voted down.
Concerns over budget allocations and funding priorities led to the decision to send the bill back to mediation. In the mediation process, senators and student government leaders will work to reach a compromise before another vote can take place.
With the deadline for budget finalization approaching on Feb. 7, further negotiations will be necessary to resolve the outstanding concerns raised during deliberation. The senate will reconvene Wednesday at 11 a.m. for mediation on the final bill.
