The Beavers saw red in the second half of their matchup against the San Diego Toreros.
Saturday, the Oregon State Women’s basketball team defeated San Diego 64-51 in Corvallis on Senior Night. The contest was a West Coast Conference showdown, and OSU entered with a 14-14 overall record and 10-7 in conference play. The Toreros came into Gill sporting a 6-20 record on the season and 2-15 in the WCC.
“It’s been an absolute honor to coach them, and obviously, we’re not done yet. Today was Senior Day, and you just want to win so badly for them that it’s a relief when you do win,” head coach Scott Rueck said about the seniors in the post-game press conference.

The first quarter saw the two teams exchange the lead five times, with neither squad holding more than a three-point advantage. The Beavers were the first to get on the board when senior guard Tiara Bolden was fouled on a three-point attempt just 21 seconds into the game and sank all three free throw attempts.
San Diego responded with a Kylie Horstmeyer layup after the teams traded turnovers following Bolden’s free throws.
By the end of the first quarter, the Beavers led 19-17, but they could not find the net in the second period, scoring only seven points, five of them coming from sophomore guard Kennedie Shuler. Oregon State went 3 for 16 from the field, while the Toreros scored 15 points in the second and went into halftime with a 32-26 lead.
The third period saw the Beavers take control on both offense and defense, holding the Toreros to 10 points on 3 for 12 shooting.
“I would say…they got less comfortable, their game got tighter…We definitely cleaned up our defense, made sure we were in the right spots, and pressed them a little harder,” said senior forward Kelsey Rees.
In the third, OSU went 8 for 10 from the field, led by Bolden and Rees, who contributed eight and seven points, respectively.
Entering the fourth with a 49-42 lead, the Beavers continued to play stifling defense, holding San Diego to nine points on 4 for 17 shooting. While the Beavers held the Toreros to fewer points in each succeeding quarter, Rueck praised San Diego’s fight.
“You wouldn’t know it from their record. If you watched that team, you’d be like ‘That’s a competitive team every night; they’re probably at least 0.500,’ you’ve got to give the San Diego staff a ton of credit,” Rueck said.

On the night, Bolden led the Beavers with 13 points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal. Shuler added 12 points, seven assists, one rebound, and one steal, while senior Guard AJ Marotte contributed 10 points, three assists, and one steal. Rees and senior forward Sela Heide brought down 14 and 11 rebounds, matching the Toreros total for the night with 25.
The Beavers, who improved to 15-14 overall and 11-7 in the WCC, play their next game on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. against Saint Mary’s at University Credit Union Pavillion in Moraga, CA.
