In another slow matchup down to the end, the Oregon State baseball team came out on top against the Grand Canyon Antelope, counting their home-field dominance with a win, 3-1, at Goss Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Beavers continue their winning streak, now nine games in a row. They also remain the 8th-ranked team in the nation.
Previously, OSU began their two-game series against the Antelopes this past Friday in a close two-point win, 6-4.
Within the first three innings, the game remained scoreless, with Beavs pitcher Ethan Kleinschmit hurling six strikeouts. However, GCU pitcher Chance Key wasn’t too far behind with four strikeouts.
OSU then caught its first break of the game with Wilson Webber sending the baseball in the gap, allowing Trent Caraway to swiftly make his way home and give the Beavers a 1-0 lead at the bottom of the third.
The matchup would then return to a back-and-forth between both pitching units and outfielders playing their elaborate chess match. Both starting pitchers have ERAs of under 1.50.
“Well, our outfielders really hustled today, a lot of great tracking today,” said head coach Mitch Canham on his outfielders, “they were really ensuring that (GCU) were not getting the hits they wanted.”
After three and a half more innings, both teams struggled to provide runs on the scoreboard. Webber earned himself two more RBIs with a strong hit and a lucky bounce off the backboard, confusing the outfielders locating the ball, allowing Jacob Kreig and Gavin Turley to score back to back.
Giving OSU the lead, 3-0, at the bottom of the seventh.
“I’m proud of our (pitchers); we wouldn’t be at our current standings and play to the best of our ability if we didn’t have our guys out at the mound,” said Canham.
The Antelope made some last-second heroics happen with a run at the top of the ninth. However, pitcher AJ Hutcheson would nail the final strikeout to send GCU home with another loss and secure the win for the Beavs 3-1.
OSU’s pitching staff did its best to keep the squad on top. The chain of Kleinschmit, Hutcheson and Tanner Douglas combined for 15 strikeouts while all maintaining under a 2.30 ERA.
Oregon State will remain at home on Tuesday, March 18, for their last matchup on this long home stint at Goss against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
