The last few weeks are here, and students are rushing through study guides and coffee. Stress is building and managing everything is beginning to crush some, maybe more than others.
Finals are a stressful time for students, and managing stress is vital during these hard last few weeks, according to Oregon State University’s Counseling and Psychological Services.
According to Bonnie Hemrick, the director of mental health promotion at OSU, services offered by CAPS include individual and group counseling and Anytime Anywhere, an app that connects students to counselors at all hours via text chat or phone call.
CAPS offers additional services, which can be found on their website.
Finals week is a rough time, and Hemrick says that she sees an increase of students reaching out for support, about stress, depression and other issues that eat away at students.
“Stress can be difficult to navigate when it feels overwhelming,” Hemrick said. “Check in on yourself and others!”
She continued by saying that seeking support when it gets too intense is one of the best ways to help manage it.
Hemrick said coping with stress is a very personal experience and that everyone copes differently. Some seek friends, family or a counselor, while others get out in nature and meditate.
She said all of these are valid coping mechanisms and good additions to eating healthy and moving your body.
CAPS also offers events during finals, such as Paws-to-Destress, which is open to all students. Students are welcomed to join CAPS’s staff and therapy dogs for peace in the busiest few weeks in a student’s life.
