Oregon State softball visited Seattle University on Wednesday and set the tone early.
In the top of the first, the Beavers orchestrated a two out rally. Maddy Clark singled into left and was followed by a Grace Messmer walk. With two on, Eliana Gottlieb would launch a booming double to the deepest part of center field, bringing home Clark and Messmer.
Seattle U would answer back in the bottom of the inning when Redhawk Jasmine Wehn brought home Tai Wilson with a sac fly.
The Beavs responded in the second with a sharp single from Kiki Escobar that scored Madi Simon. The Redhawks would try to crawl back in the bottom of the second with a Sydney Frankeberger single into center that drove in one. But the Beaver bats showed up in the top of the third to put them firmly ahead.
Paige Doerr grounded into a fielder’s choice, getting Gottlieb out at second. Madi Simon walked to bring Abby Doerr to the plate. With her sister on second, Abby Doerr would send a ball to the wall in left center, plating Paige Doerr and Simon. 5-2 Beavers.
Beaver pitcher Logan Hulon would give up one more run in the bottom of the third but end her day with four strikeouts over three innings. She was relieved by Ellie Garcia, and the Redhawks seemed to have no answer for her.
Garcia went four innings, facing 13 batters, striking out three and only allowing two hits. The innings she pitched were quick and efficient, not allowing the Redhawks to settle in.
The Beavs won 5-3 in their mid-week tune up game and will stay in Seattle to face the eighth ranked University of Washington for a three game series starting Thursday.
