Despite a hard effort from Oregon State women’s volleyball graduate student Kalli Schoening, the Beavers fell at home to the Santa Clara Broncos 3-0, stumbling to only manage a .165% hitting percentage.
Schoening helped the Beavers with key plays, including four blocks and six kills. However, this display wasn’t enough to overcome the Broncos, dropping the sets 25-17, 25-16, and 25-18.
The first set was back and forth, with junior Lauren Rumel and Schoening leading the way for the Beavs.
Despite plays by Rumel and Schoening, and two kills from Annika Hester, the Beavs found themselves trailing the whole set, eventually conceding the first set 25-16.
The second started with the Beavers off to an 8-6 lead before Santa Clara rallied for seven straight points, taking a 13-8 lead. Schoening and Hester continued to impress for the Beavers, but they would drop the second set 25-17.
The Beavers started the third set trailing 6-2. A strong play from senior Vivian Light helped claw the Beavers back to a 10-8 deficit before the Broncos closed out the final set, winning the final set 25-18.
With this result, the Beavers fell to 3-11 on the season and 1-3 in conference play.
The loss regardless, several Beavers continued strong 2024 campaigns, with Rumel continuing to lead the team in kills with another strong performance, adding nine more to her season tally, which has her in the top ten in the West Coast Conference.
With tonight’s result, the Beavers are sitting in ninth place in the WCC, welcoming first-place San Francisco on Saturday to continue a two-game homestand.
