The College of Engineering’s wellness counselor, Shannon Frasca, will be hosting a mental health workshop as part of their Mind Matter workshop series informing students on how to manage imposter syndrome. The workshop will take place on Nov. 7 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Kearney Hall, room 311.
The COE Wellness Program is a Counseling and Psychological Services resource embedded into the college made to engage directly with engineering students who, despite being the largest college at OSU, were disproportionately using CAPS services, according to Frasca.
“(CAPS) realized there was this discrepancy, and so they thought maybe they could increase support by giving the college an embedded counselor,” Frasca said. “We have seen COE students reaching out for support at higher numbers, which is awesome.”
The Mind Matter Mental Health workshop series covers a rotating selection of topics throughout the academic year, including creativity and well-being, strategies for staying motivated and combating seasonal depression. Frasca also collaborates with other organizations, like the Academic Success Center, to offer more information about other on-campus resources.
According to Frasca, workshop sessions typically include information and interactive elements to keep students engaged. For instance, art therapy activities are often presented with creativity and well-being.
“I want to be creative and make sure I’m providing services that are actually going to be meaningful and impactful for (students),” Frasca explained. “I’d love to hear from (students) if they have ideas or opinions or thoughts about what they want to see.”
The most common reasons COE students seek out wellness program help are to manage social and generalized anxiety, depression and imposter syndrome.
“Generally, just students not feeling very connected (to) their peers and from their program or from themselves,” Frasca said.
In addition to the workshop series, COE Wellness also provides consultations, individual therapy, sessions, informational presentations and support groups. Frasca hosts a support group for social anxiety, typically in fall and spring terms.
