In celebration of the Lunar New Year, the Taiwanese Student Association is hosting its annual Taiwanese Cultural Night event Saturday, Feb. 1, in the Memorial Union Ballroom.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and will run till 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. “Attendees are welcome to wear festive attire or clothing inspired by Taiwanese culture,” said Tzu-Chun Kao, president of the Taiwanese Student Association.
Tickets can be purchased for $5 from Oregon State’s event site or at the door if tickets remain.
The event listing states that attendees can expect cultural performances from the campus K-pop dance group Kinetic, game booths with the chance to earn prizes, interactive activities and a delicious Taiwanese dinner. “Our goal is to provide the OSU community with an engaging and immersive experience that highlights Taiwan’s unique traditions,” said Kao.
Kao also shared the menu attendees can expect:
刈包 (Gua Bao) – Also called the “Taiwanese hamburger,” this dish features a soft steamed bun filled with braised pork, pickled vegetables, and peanut powder. It symbolizes prosperity and is often enjoyed during celebrations.
炒米粉 (Stir-fried Rice Noodles) – A dish made with rice noodles, cabbage, carrots, and shrimp, commonly served at festive gatherings as a symbol of longevity.
滷白菜 (Stewed Napa Cabbage) – A slow-cooked dish with shiitake mushrooms and dried shrimp, representing family warmth and togetherness.
滷肉 (Braised Pork Belly) – A rich and flavorful dish slow-braised in soy sauce, a classic comfort food in Taiwanese households.
滷蛋與滷豆腐 (Braised Eggs and Tofu) – Eggs symbolize new beginnings and wholeness, while tofu represents good fortune and stability.
