The Beavers were able to shut out the Tigers 12-0 to clinch a spot in the Super Regionals.

Oregon State started out strong when junior outfielder Steven Kwan sent one over the right wall in the bottom of the first inning, scoring a home run for OSU. From that point on, the Beavers never looked back.

Freshman pitcher Kevin Abel was the star of the night for shutting out the LSU Tigers and limiting them to three hits and zero runs

“It was a lot of fun,” Abel said. “It’s kind of just fixing up the mental game, just staying with myself. Knowing that I have the best defense in the country behind me helps, and I especially used that today.”

Out of 114 pitches, the freshman was able to tally up a 3.16 ERA and eight strikeouts before junior pitcher Jake Mulholland was sent in as a relief in the ninth inning to put the game away.

OSU head coach Pat Casey was impressed with the teams performance on the night.

“The pitching performance by Kevin was outstanding,” Casey said. “We continued to defend, swing the bats and play at a high level so I’m proud of the club.”

In addition to the win, junior infielder Nick Madrigal will be looking forward to a potential phone call from an MLB team soon as he is predicted to be a first-round draft pick by different sports analysts from ESPN and the MLB.

“Whatever is meant to happen is going to happen, It’s kind of out of my control now,” Madrigal said. “It’s going to be a great moment for my family, it’s a lot bigger than me. Right now I’m focused on this postseason run, Oregon State, wearing this uniform. It’ll be a special moment, but whatever happens I’ll be very thankful for.”

The 2018 MLB Draft will start at 3 p.m. on Monday, and the Beavers will be taking on Minnesota at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field for the Super Regionals this weekend.
