Gill Coliseum witnessed the Beavers extend their season winning streak to three, defeating the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners 43-4.

Entering the match with a record of 5-5, the Beavers walked away with their sixth match win of the year against CSU Bakersfield. According to assistant coach Josh Rhoden, going into the second half of the season, the team has come into its own.

“It feels good to be on the winning side,” Rhoden said.

There was a lot of action during the afternoon battles. CSU Bakersfield fought hard throughout the day, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the hungry Beavers.

The duel against the Roadrunners began with the 149 weight class with redshirt junior, Riley Gurr, and wrestling redshirt senior Josh Brown. Although Gurr had the first takedown of the match, Brown won by major decision 16-7, giving CSU Bakersfield four points to start the afternoon.

In the 157 weight class bout was senior Isaiah Crosby pinning CSU Bakersfield red-shirt sophomore Brock Rodgers in the first 28 seconds of the first period, giving Oregon State the advantage as the score stood at 6-4.

The momentum carried as red-shirt sophomore Matthew Olguin, who was set to wrestle at the 165 weight class on Sunday, took home points for Oregon State through a bye.

Redshirt senior, and the PAC-12’s Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 10, Aaron “Mateo” Olmos, who wrestled at the 174 weight class, won by decision versus red-shirt Albert Urias, as he successfully took down Urias with mere seconds left on the clock and the final score of their match being 3-1.

At the 184 weight class, redshirt sophomore Trey Munoz won by a technical fall against senior Jacob Hansen, 17-3. At the 197 weight class, redshirt sophomore Jackson McKinney pinned sophomore Mateo Morales with 46 seconds left in the second period.

Wrestling heavyweight sophomore Charley Hastriter won by major decision against the Roadrunners’ heavyweight sophomore, Jake Andrews, 8-1.

Going back to the top of the weight classes, redshirt junior Brandon Kaylor won by decision in the 125 weight class against redshirt junior Eddie Flores 3-2.

Freshman Gabe Whisenhunt, in the 133 weight class, won by major decision against redshirt junior Chance Rich. The 141 weight class was the last to meet during the meet, where redshirt junior Cleveland Belton pinned redshirt freshman Jose Landin in the first period with one minute and 19 seconds left.

Rhoden is happy with today’s performance while understanding the task at hand that comes up soon. The Beavers are set to face the Sun Devils next week.

“They’re a great team, I think they have been ranked as high as number six [in the nation],” Rhoden said. “We’re excited, obviously, a conference rival…they’re a very good team, they’re skilled in all positions and so we have to do an excellent job next week. Fortunately, we get the home crowd.”

Oregon State wrestling versus Arizona State will take place at Gill Coliseum on Feb. 5 at 7 p.m.
