The Oregon State volleyball team fell to the University of San Diego Toreros at Gill Coliseum on Wednesday night in a three set sweep.
The Beavers entered the matchup at 16–7 overall and 10–3 in West Coast Conference play, falling to 16–8 and 10–4 with the loss. The Toreros improved to 20–4 and 13–0 in the WCC. The defeat also snapped Oregon State’s two-match winning streak.
San Diego extended its win streak to 13 matches with the victory, also maintaining its hold on first place in the WCC. Oregon State remained in the upper tier of the standings despite the setback, having entered the night in the league’s top four. Both teams stay well positioned as they continue their push to the postseason.
The match opened with both trading points in a back and forth. The Toreros’ attack operated with precision, allowing them to pull away after tying the set at 15-15 all. The Toreros ended up hitting .480 in the first set to keep Oregon State out of rhythm, and they carried that efficiency to a 25–18 victory in the opening frame.
Though the Beavers never led in the second set, it was close throughout. Oregon State faced four ties in the second, the coming at 11-11. The Toreros hit .444 for the frame, building an early lead and separating themselves from the Beavers by winning eight of the nine points following the 11-11 tie to bring the score to 19-13.
San Diego won the second set 25-16 to take a two sets-to-none advantage.
San Diego closed out the match in the third set, again controlling the tempo and limiting the Beavers’ attempt to wrestle away the lead. Jumping out to an early 9-3 lead to start the third, the San Diego offense hit .407 in the frame, with key kills coming from Isabel Clark and Nemo Beach that pushed the lead into double digits. Oregon State’s late efforts from Lauren Rumel and Maeli Cormier were not enough to power the Beavers to a comeback, as the Toreros took the final set 25–14 to sweep the match.
For San Diego, Beach led the way with 14 kills and two aces, while Clark added 12 kills. Baylea Sparks anchored the defense with four blocks, and Kylie Munday contributed 33 assists to the Toreros’ output. Olivia Bennett chipped in nine digs in a balanced effort that demonstrated why the Toreros are at the top of the standings.
Oregon State’s top producers included Rumel, who recorded a match-high 16 kills. Cormier added nine, and Annika Hester had seven. Jackie Matias led the Beavers with 26 assists, and Yasemin Narlioglu collected eight digs, which was the Beavers’ team high.
The Beavers play their next game on Saturday at Pacific University, with the opening serve set for noon.
