It’s back to business for Oregon State University’s student government Senate as they passed a new bill and confirmed several new appointees during their first meeting of the spring term.

 The new bill, “24-Hour Library Funding Request for 4/26 to 4/30 and 6/1 to 6/11” — authored by The Associated Students of OSU’s Campus Improvement Committee — will approve the allocation of $8,700 from the ASOSU fund balance in order to extend library hours during “key academic periods.”

According to the language of the bill, the funding would go toward supporting 24-hour library access during week five, week 10 and finals week to “ensure that students have a safe, reliable, and accessible space to study and prepare for finals.”

Senator Katya Karlapati said the funds will also go toward providing snacks for late-night students.

“Just the security and keeping (the Valley Library) open came up to $8,100 and some change,” Karlapati said. “And I brought that up to $8,700 to include for snacks.”

According to Karlapati, both the library and security have been “very open and excited” about the plan.

The bill passed nearly unanimously in the Senate with only one “nay” vote against from Senator Avery Lucchi. It will now be sent to ASOSU President Masha Mogylevsky for them to sign.

Also at the meeting, the Senate confirmed the appointment of two new senators: Shawn Durr and Matthew O’Connor. Durr said he is looking to make a “big campus improvement” before he leaves OSU, and O’Connor said he became interested in becoming an ASOSU senator because he felt “unheard and discriminated against” in his personal life due to his gender identity.

The Senate also confirmed Elizabeth Eckman to the position of ASOSU archivist, Kayla Liotine to the position of records clerk and Roshan Murali to the new position of website coordinator.
