Are you looking to party like it’s a wedding, but worrying about the ring? The Middle Eastern Dance Association at Oregon State University has a solution for you.
MEDA will hold its annual Mock Wedding from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Memorial Union Ballroom.
The event, which is free entry to all students and community members alike, will include dance performances by MEDA, Kinetic K-Pop Dance Club, Pakistani Student Association and Sassafras, a local belly dance studio.
“Within the Middle East and North Africa region, many cultures share food, music, dancing, and performing during joyous ceremonies such as weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations,” MEDA President Riyana Guerrero said in an email. “We want to be able to bring as many of those cultures and experiences together as we can; hence, Mock Wedding!”
Along with dancing, club members will do henna art and the local Mediterranean restaurant Little Morocco will provide free food, according to event organizers.
According to Guerrero, after the performances there will be an open-dance time when attendees will have the opportunity to learn belly dance and dabke techniques that they may have seen in the performances.
This is the Mock Wedding’s first year as a signature event, meaning it gets more grant funding.
“We have the capability to make this event larger and grander than we could last year, meaning more food, more henna artists, more decorations, and more fun!” Guerrero said in an email.
Free tickets can be claimed online on the Student Experiences & Engagement website prior to the event. Formal dress is encouraged, but not required.
