Oregon State University’s Athletics department proposed a new student fee to the University Budget Committee that would increase the amount each student pays per term.
Proposed by OSU Senior Assistant Athletics Director Jacque Bruns, The Athletics Excellence fee would add a $25 per term fee for each student at OSU.
According to the proposal’s document, the PAC-12 is transitioning from a Power Five conference to a Group of Five conference, which will change the athletics funding model “significantly.”
“At this level of competition, universities nationwide rely more heavily on institutional support and student fees to maintain competitive programming and essential services,” the document said.
The fee would go to fund a broad base of facility and infrastructure needs across OSU athletics.
According to the proposal, the fee would “contribute to the continued well-being of student-athletes through improved resources and services that promote their health, development, and competitive success.”
However, while discussing the Student Fee Committee’s recommendations for the 2027 fiscal year, the SFC unanimously agreed that the Athletics Excellence Fee “violated the mutual trust” between the Associated Students of Oregon State University and the Athletics Department, going against their Memorandum of Understanding.
Students currently pay 61% fair market value for athletics tickets. If the Athletics Department’s resolution passes, SFC Chair Saegis Abbott said that students would pay nearly 100% market price for tickets, essentially negating the student discount.
In a resolution passed by the SFC, ASOSU requested the UBC remove the proposed fee from consideration, and in the future, “Athletics shall use the SFC process to request additional funds from students if necessary.”
