Oregon State softball took on Seattle University Redhawks Saturday afternoon at Kelly Field in the second game of three, having an explosive 13-9 win.
“It’s a great job for the whole entire team,” Head Coach Laura Berg said, “we had pitching, we had hitting, we had defense, all moving in the same direction.”
The Beavers started off hot in the bottom of the first when Jaeya Butler had a home run with Jada Lewis on first base, allowing the Beavers to score first.
This put the Beavers up 2-0 early in the game.
The Redhawks didn’t take long though to answer back when they struck back with a 4 hit inning scoring two runs. Tying the game 2-2.
This didn’t stop the Beavers from continuing with their aggressive hitting.
The second inning was nothing short of the bats cracking for the Beavers. They had a six hit inning, scoring seven runs.
Starting off the rally for the Beavers was Paige Bambarger homering out to left field. Right behind her was Nikki Donahue doubling to left center.
These two hits were followed by the Beaver line up producing hit after hit.
The Beavers produced two singles, three doubles, and drew two walks. This would become the highest scoring inning for the Beavers in the game putting the score at 7-2 at the top of the third.
“It was a lot of fun. We got home runs, we got doubles, we got triples, we got squeeze plays, we were able to do a bunch of things,” Berg said about what was clicking for the team.
The Beaver’s rally didn’t slow the Redhawks down, they came back scoring five runs.
Taylor Fitch started it off, singling out to the front of the plate and advancing to second on an error in the infield.
This error led to a series of hits for the Redhawks.
Ava Sin singled, advancing Fitch to third and on a pass ball Fitch scored and Sin advanced.
But when Brooklyn Jones doubled to left field scoring a run and advancing runners, the Beavers looked to change the momentum, taking out their starting pitcher, Kimberlee Aleman and introducing Amelia Streuber to the mound.
Streuber’s first batter she faced, Aurora Zepeda, singled to center field, scoring two more runs for the Redhawks.
This inning was put to an end when Sophia Kissling grounded out to second base.
Jada Lewis started off the Beavers with a triple to center field and Butler stepped up homering deep center field scoring two runs for the Beavers.
This put the score at 11-7.
The momentum on offense switched for both teams and their defense was put to life, when both teams had three up three downs for the fourth inning.
The silence on offense didn’t last for long when the Redhawks started a two out rally.
With back to back strikeouts by Strueber, Zepeda answered back with a triple to right field, resulting in a run for the RedHawks.
The Beavers, though having a single hit inning, drawing two walks and advancing on a wild pitch, were able to squeeze in a run putting the score to 12-9 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The sixth and seventh innings were nothing but more of the same.
The Beavers were able to advance their lead to 13-9 to secure the victory.
“It’s about pride now, so these guys, you know they got nothing to lose…I want the series win,” Coach Berg said.
The Beavers play the final game in the series tomorrow at Kelly field at 12pm.
