After a 5-3 loss to the Weber State Wildcats in game one of a doubleheader, Beaver Softball looked to even the score in game two on Friday afternoon.
While the game was pushed to extra innings, the Wildcats would once again come out victorious, 3-1 at Kelly Field.
With Right Said Fred’s “I’m Too Sexy” blaring from the Kelly Field speakers, pitcher Kimberlee Aleman looked to get the party started for the Beavers.
“I just wanted to go in there and start the game off right,” the freshman said.
However, it got off to a slow start with a run, an error, an injured Paige Bambarger and no answer to start the first inning.
Through the third, each team remained evenly matched. With a single run and one hit separating the Wildcats from the Beavers, Aleman looked to keep the train on the tracks.
“For us, defense has been the rocky part, so going out there and pitching to the best of my abilities,” the starting pitcher said about her goal for the game.
The Beavers took to the plate at the bottom of the fourth after the defense cleaned up with no hits, no errors and no runs in the top of the inning.
Aleman seemed to take the defense into her own hands at the top of the fifth with two lined outs directly to her. Senior catcher Nikki Donahue looked to take that energy into the bottom of the inning but came up short after a fly out to right field.
Wildcat pitcher Raina Navaro walked Rylei Trujillo. Camrynn Gordon came in and hit a hard drive down the left field foul line. The hits kept coming as Jada Lewis hit a drive out to center field.
The Wildcats looked to make a change as they brought in RJ Parra, but it seemed that their attempt to shake up the Beavers was in vain as Trujillo scored an RBI single off the bat of Jaeya Butler tying the ball game 1-1 with two innings left.
After a fly out and a walk, Mya Harrison looked to break the tie and put the Beavers in the lead for the first time in the series. Her effort never came to fruition as the Beavers were left with two hits, no errors and two left on base with no runs to end the sixth.
A line drive down the center for the Wildcats started the seventh, but their efforts did not result in a scoring opportunity after an incredible sliding out by Lici Campbell.
The Beavers battled till the end of the game, but a strike out by Tristian Thompson signaled the switch to extra innings.
After an error at second base, the Beavers would scramble to make up the run. After a clutch double play by first baseman Thompson to catcher Nikki, the Beavers would manage to stay in the game. A single through left center would extend the Wildcats lead 3-1.
A last minute switch on the mound saw the end of the game for Aleman as Amelia Streuber stepped up to the mound.
The Beavers made it out of the top of the eighth inning trailing by two with a runner on second. Campbell started things off for the Beavers but struck out looking.
Mya Harrison would look to get something started but would fall short. The Beavers would end the bottom of the eighth losing 3-1.
The Beavers will look to get on the board against the Wildcats for the final game of the series on Saturday at Kelly Field.
