This year has been a pressing news year. The Barometer published over 500 articles since the academic year began in September. We released nine print issues with the hard work of the design team, photo team, marketing team, editing team, sports teams and writers.
Those numbers are a testament to how hard our team has worked this year. And yet, there is so much news that was not included in our publication.
One priority I had this year was making our news even more accessible. Last year, our previous Editor-in-Chief Katie Livermore, worked with KBVR-FM to record audio for print stories. I wanted to expand this and include audio for each and every article. That should now be available at the top of each story, and hopefully, we can improve the accessibility of this even more in the future.
As a student newspaper, we do our best to cover this campus in its entirety. But, about 25 student reporters to over 37,000 students in the entirety of this campus is not an easy ratio to work with. That is where you, as our readers, come in.
As we transition into a new leadership team, with Alex Hyatt at its head, I encourage you to continue sending news tips, letters to the editors and emailing anytime. Our inboxes are open to hear your voices.
This year has been challenging to say the least, but I am also proud of the work the team completed.
We have also learned a lot. Balancing voices in articles is something we have put a lot of focus on this year. From the graduate student strike in the fall to the Associated Students of Oregon State University stories that are still ongoing, I think we did well in reporting the truth. I hope we can keep that priority, to balance voices, as this publication moves forward.
It has been difficult, but so rewarding to be at the forefront of all of this coverage.
I hope that this team can continue to be the watchdog on our campus. The students here deserve to have their voices heard and deserve to have information given to them. The Barometer is in a position to give them that, so I hope we can continue that into future years and even improve in our ability to do so.
This publication is in great hands, with Alex Hyatt taking over for the summer and Molly Hoglund taking over in the fall. I have full confidence that both have the ability to push this paper to new heights, to challenge the team to push for coverage and to continue to highlight underrepresented voices.
Thank you for putting this paper in my hands through this year and giving me your trust.
