As students return to school this fall, Dixon Recreation Center hosts Beavers with a week of various fitness, health and wellness events.
Starting Monday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. there will be a Recreational Sports fair at Student Legacy Park. Here, students will have the opportunity to connect with the 38 sport clubs as well as learn about the different recreational sports programs and services at OSU.
Wednesday, the Dixon Recreation Center will have a Group Training Trial in its lower courts from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. where attendees will have the chance to train in groups with DAMFit, Kickboxing and Olympic Lifting.
On Thursday there will be Empower Hours in Weight Room 2 at Dixon from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Prioritizing belonging and community, Empower Hours are sessions meant to support individuals who don’t always feel comfortable in traditional fitness environments. This event will be run by rec sports trainers who will offer a structured resistance training workout using cable machines, benches, weights and more.
Last but not least, the Fit Fest will be held Friday in Dixon from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. where students can engage in new ways to move with different energizing group fitness classes. These include a Pilates, BEavSTRONG Weight Training, Cycling and Yoga class.
Fit Fest classes will be 30 minutes long, providing participants with an overview of what to expect of the longer sessions while also, “providing a balanced workout that doesn’t leave participants too tired to try other classes,” TerraAnne Johnson, fitness and wellness formats coordinator for Recreational Sports, said.
According to Johnson, students will need to register for the Empower Hour and although the other events do not require prior registration, some might have limited spaces available. For example, the Cycle Class during the Fit Fest can only host a maximum of 24 people because of the number of bikes in the studio.
All of these events are free to attend for OSU students. Wellness Week activities, excluding the Rec Sports fair, will also reoccur during the first week of the winter and spring terms.
