Corvallis Sister Cities Association to hold presentation, Ethiopian dinner to support Gondar

The Corvallis Sister Cities Association is hosting A Taste Of Ethiopia, an event with Ethiopian food and a CSCA presentation, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ on Sunday.

The event will be held on SW West Hills Road, and begins at 5:30 p.m., with doors opening at 5 p.m. Along with the dinner and presentation, the event will also feature a raffle.

Tickets for adults cost $30, with the money raised going to support projects in Gondar, Corvallis’s sister city in Ethiopia, according to the event’s website. According to Corvallis Sister Cities Association-Gondar Council Chair Patty Harris, the event is almost sold out, with the remaining tickets available on the event’s website

The event is being hosted for the sixth time according to Harris. The dinner, which is currently planned to be held every other year, is being held for the first time since 2020 this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Projects supported by the event include the construction and maintenance of wells in the Gondar area, according to Harris, with the CSCA currently raising funds to construct a well at the Bridge of Hope Orphanage and Children’s Village in Gondar.

The event will also support improvements to Gondar’s Walaj Elementary School, and the CSCA’s Sister School Project, which pairs schools in Corvallis with schools in Gondar, with students at both schools working on activities to exchange with each other. This year, students at participating schools are exchanging information about games, according to Harris.

“We recently received the drawings and letters from the children in Gondar about their favorite games and soon the schools here in Corvallis will be answering with their favorite games,” said Harris.

Harris said Oregon State University students interested in learning more about the organization could look at the group’s website, and that students were welcome to volunteer.
