Saturday afternoon, the Oregon State Beavers won 3-1 in their fourth spring game against the Southern Oregon University Raiders at Paul Lorenz Field.
Oregon State dominated with the possession of the ball, totaling eight shots on goal and 11 corner shots.
The Beavers saw multiple shots saved or deflected before finally finding the back of the net.
After a very slow first half with many missed opportunities from the Beavs, the Raiders scored first in the 40th minute of the first half with a goal from Ariel De Dios Cruz. The Beavers were fast to strike back when senior captain Fran Cortijo buried a shot off the 11th corner kick of the game, tying the game 1-1 at halftime.
The Beavers came out with new energy in the second half, finally breaking through the Raiders’ defense.
Cortijo struck again in the 55th minute off of a penalty kick, giving the Beavers a 2-1 lead not far into the second half.
Just minutes later, at 68:20, freshman Massimo Meneses attacked the defense, finishing inside the box and contributing another goal for the Beavs, extending their lead to 3-1.
Sophomore Mark Wieder received a yellow card, leaving a Raider injured on the field. Senior captain Cortijo was seen helping the player off the field in a show of good sportsmanship.
The Oregon State Beavers will return to Paul Lorenz Field at 2 p.m. on May 4 for their matchup with Western Oregon.
