Editor’s Note: This story has been updated from the printed version to include Ben Gulbranson’s transfer update.
The transfer portal has officially closed for the year for both college men’s basketball and football, and both teams have gone under construction with their rosters.
In trying to fill spots of players who transferred away, the men’s basketball team only has 14 total games started between the remaining players, while the football team locked up their quarterback for the year early on.
Beaver football didn’t see too many key pieces depart, with their leading rusher, receiver and tackler all returning.
Men’s Basketball
After what some may call a surprising year, where the team outperformed their preseason expectations, head coach Wayne Tinkle will once again coach a completely different team from the last, just like the previous season.
Lead scorer Michael Rataj was the first to enter the transfer portal, as he joined the Baylor University Bears, and was quickly followed by Parsa Fallah and Nate Kingz, the second and third leading scorers.
“To Beaver Nation — thank you,” Rataj said in an Instagram post. “The love and support I’ve received during my time here has been truly special. Whether it was in Gill Coliseum, or on the road, or in the community, I felt the power of this fan base every step of the way. After much reflection, I have decided to enter my name into the transfer portal.”
Fallah is set to join the University of Oklahoma Sooners, while Kingz heads to the East Coast and will become a member of the Syracuse University Orange.
“After much thought and discussion with my family, I have decided to enter the transfer portal,” Fallah said in an Instagram post. “This decision was not easy, but I believe it’s the best step for my future as I continue to develop and pursue my goals.”
The bleeding didn’t stop there, as the fourth and fifth leading scorers, just like the rest, decided to switch it up.
Demarco Minor joined the University of Pittsburgh Panthers, while Liutauras Lelevicius is still undecided, and is in the portal. The final player that entered the portal was Maxim Logue, who is joining Florida Atlantic University. Logue was a developmental player and saw playing time later in the 2024-2025 season.
So far, three players have committed to play in the 2025-2026 season: Stephen Olowoniyi, Keziah Ekissi and Noah Amenhauser.
Olowoniyi, who averaged 13.9 points and 6.8 rebounds last season for the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles. Olowoniyi was 21st in field goal percentage, shooting 59.1%. The 6-foot-8 sophomore joins the Beavers with two more years of eligibility.
While no new players can enter the portal, there are still tons of players who need to find teams. Tinkle and his crew will have their work cut out for them, recruiting from both the portal, but also internationally, where they have found quite a bit of success in the past.
Football
Beaver football instantly found their spark plug for the 2025-2026 season early in the transfer portal window, securing Duke transfer Maalik Murphy in mid-December to lead their offense. Murphy threw for 2,933 yards last season for the Blue Devils, with a 26-12 touchdown-to-interception ratio.
The team did see a few departures, as the second and fourth leading tacklers on defense in Isaiah Chisom and Melvin Jordan IV entered the portal, with Chisom headed to the University of California, Los Angeles, and Jordan headed to Georgia Tech. Jack Kane, leading the team in interceptions last season, also entered his name into the portal on April 8.
“After careful consideration and reflection, I have made the decision to enter the transfer portal as a graduate transfer with one year of eligibility remaining,” Kane said on Instagram. “I am extremely grateful for the experiences I’ve had at Oregon State University, and I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Coach Bray, Coach Blue, Coach Coop and all of my teammates.”
Starting quarterbacks Gevani McCoy and Ben Gulbranson also entered the portal, with McCoy headed to Texas State, and Gulbranson initially retiring from football to pursue his medical degree before unretiring and joining the Stanford Cardinal. The quarterback squad lost some receivers, with the top tight end graduating and signing with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent, along with Jeremiah Noga entering the transfer portal on April 25, who had the fourth-most receiving yards on the team.
“After a lot of thought, I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal as a grad transfer with one year of eligibility left,” Noga said in an Instagram post. “I’m so thankful for everything Oregon State has given me — the coaches, teammates, training staff and everyone who supported me along the way.”
Joshua Gray, the only Beaver to make it to the NFL combine and draft, signed a deal with the Atlanta Falcons after going undrafted.
The Beavers brought back leading rusher Anthony Hankerson, receiver Trent Walker and tackler Skyler Thomas, while adding tight end Riley Williams from the University of Miami, and a lot of defense and linemen to bolster the thin positions and increase the playmaking potential.
Spring football ended after the spring game on April 19, so the team will now shift gears as the start of the season looms on Aug. 30, against the University of California, Berkeley.
