Oregon State University welcomes U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden to give this year’s Gov. Tom McCall Memorial Lecture in Public Affairs. The event will take place May 28 at 6 p.m. in the LeSells Stewart Center.
The lecture will be a conversation between Sen. Wyden and retired Associate Press journalist Terence Petty, according to OSU Today, where they will discuss Sen. Wyden’s new book “It Takes Chutzpah: How to Fight Fearlessly for Progressive Change.”
The book is a “call to action by a senior U.S. politician, describing how Americans of all age groups, persuasions, and occupations can defy convention, chart new pathways for their communities, schools, at work and in life,” according to the book’s blurb.
Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines the Yiddish word “Chutzpah” as “audacious boldness often paired with reckless self-confidence. Someone with chutzpah dares to do or say things that seem shocking to others.” In the book, Sen. Wyden offers several key values referred to as “Ron’s 12 Rules of Chutzpah,” according to the book blurb.
The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required prior to the event. Upon registration, attendees have the option to submit questions for the Q&A portion at the end of the lecture.
Sen. Wyden previously gave the McCall Lecture in 1996, when he was first elected to represent Oregon in the U.S. Senate, according to OSU Today.
The McCall lecture was established by the College of Liberal Arts in 1982 in honor of former Oregon governor Tom McCall. The annual lecture aims to honor his memory “by keeping alive the ideas and values in public service, journalism, and environmental protection to which he dedicated his life; and to bring to campus notable people in journalism and public affairs who exemplify in their lives the excellence displayed by McCall throughout his career, “ according to OSU’s School of Public Policy.
