Three runs in the ninth inning was all it took for the Beavers.
Every Beaver fan had stayed into the ninth, every mouth was cheering loudly and the cowboy bell rang strong.
Leading into the tenth inning after tying the game 4-4 in the ninth, Aiva Arquette doubled, Gavin Turley singled, Wilson Weber intentionally walked, Trent Caraway reached first as Arquette went out at home and up came AJ Singer.
Singer singles to center field and Turley comes running home, 5-4 final score and the Beavers defeat the Florida State University Seminoles in the Corvallis super regional at Goss Stadium. Caraway and Weber follow running at Singer as the team celebrates on the field.
“This one is definitely number one in my book,” Singer said on his game winner.
The Seminoles led the entirety of the game up until the ninth inning. Beavers head coach Mitch Canham and assistant coach Ryan Gipson were scheming in the dugout in the ninth inning with two outs on the board and Weber on second after Trent Caraway struck out and Singer grounded out. Up comes Bryce Hubbard to pinch hit for Tyce Peterson, and he gets on base via a walk.
“You have to finish games, and you have to finish pitches, and we did not finish the inning or really finish the pitches we needed to make to end it, but they’re a good team and you can see why we’re here playing them and they earned it and they earned the win,” Seminoles head coach Link Jarrett said about the Beavers post-game.
Dallas Macias then pinch hits for Canon Reeder and hits a single down right field, as Hubbard advanced to second and Weber to third making the bases loaded with Kreig up to bat and two outs.
“I’m looking at the lineup of what’s coming up and picturing all those things. I was talking to coach Gipson about possible plans of what come in, if they’re staying there, if they’re going somewhere in their head, I look over at Hubbard and I go, ‘That guys going to get on base’ and I look at Macias and I go ‘he’s going to get on base too’ and I look over there at the big guy (Krieg) and I’m like, ‘This is a huge moment, and he’s gonna handle it like a man,’” Canham said post game.
Krieg singled down left field, allowing Macias and Hubbard to score to make it a tie game and head into the 10th inning.
“I love that my kids were at the game today, and they got to watch that too. My son’s gonna be a big kid and I was like, ‘Dude check that out, that could be like you one day,’ but he’s being inspiring right now by Jacob. He’s being inspiring by Sing. He’s being inspired by these guys,” Canham said.
True freshman pitcher Dax Whitney got the start pitching through till the fifth inning with 97 pitches on his belt. Whitney attacked the Seminoles batters and threw 10 strikeouts, keeping Alex Lodise to one hit after five at bats. Nelson Keljo relieved Whitney in the fifth inning and continued the strikeout mentality.
“It’s more than just baseball and I wish everyone could have a chance to go through what it is to be in that clubhouse with these guys and it’s such a special group…You’re giving it everything you possibly can. It take a lot of stress out of it because you’ve been working your butt off and Goss has been absolutely electric,” Canham said.
The Beavers look to continue the electricity as they play the Seminoles on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Goss Stadium. Should they win, they will advance in the NCAA tournament, and if they lose, there will be a game three deciding game on Sunday with a time to be determined.
