After a triumphant finish to their season, the Oregon State University baseball team finds itself on the brink of greatness in the NCAA College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
Recently, the Beavers had a winning finish in a hosted regional series, which was followed by a victorious hosted super regional against the Florida State Seminoles.
The Beavers hit the road to the Cornhusker State last week and began their hopeful journey for the school’s fourth national championship title.
The last time the Beavers brought home a college World Series trophy was in 2018.
On Friday, the Beavers faced the Louisville Cardinals.
The game was a slugfest to start, with each pitcher controlling the tempo of the game.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning. The Beavs had the bases loaded, and both Gavin Turley and Wilson Weber grounded two balls deep, allowing Trent Caraway and Aiva Arquette to take home respectively, giving the Beavs a 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals responded with a run in the sixth inning; however, AJ Singer got the Beavers on the board with a run of his own, giving OSU a 3-1 lead.
The Beavers’ lead looked insurmountable heading into the ninth inning, until the Cardinals came storming back with two runs in the top of the inning to tie the game 3-3.
Gavin Turley then hit a long drive down the left side, which set Arquette to nab his second run of the game and give OSU the walkoff win, 4-3.
The Beavers wrapped up game one with four runs, 11 hits, three errors, and a strong start to their World Series.
However, the next game left the Beavs in the tough spot that they currently sit in.
On Sunday, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers matched up with OSU.
The game arguably was called in the first inning, where Coastal loaded the bases and first baseman Colby Thorndyke doubled to right center, earning three runs to take the 3-0 lead to start the match.
Outfielder Easton Talt launched a home run, bringing some hope back to the Beaver dugout. However, Coastal rattled off two more runs in the top of the fourth inning and took a commanding 5-1 lead, one that showed to be too great for the Beavs to overcome.
Both teams scored one more run, for the Beavs that being Gavin Turley showing off his arm with a home run in the ninth inning. The final score sounded 6-2, Coastal Carolina.
The Beavers finished with two runs, seven hits, and two errors.
As for what’s next up for OSU, they will rematch against Louisville on Tuesday. They will seek to earn not just a win to stay alive, but for a chance at remediation against Coastal, who will be waiting for them in the final game before heading into the College World Series finals, if OSU succeeds in their second go around against the Cardinals.
