Editor’s note: These predictions are as of Oct. 7.
Nik: After so boldly predicting the Beavers would go 9-3, the team promptly swept all my hopes down the gutter. However, is it the team itself or is there more at play?
Nonetheless, I’m sorry.
Oregon State headed into the season with high expectations. And yet the team after six weeks looks lost; one of the few remaining schools in the country that has not found a win this season. Who’s at fault?
The play calling for both sides of the ball and the special teams coaching have been rough to start the year and with little sign of improvement, let alone the necessary coaching staff adjustments, it doesn’t look like it will change anytime soon.
So, now with the ultimate tool of hindsight, how will the Beavs’ final stretch of play fare?
Josh: Nik might be sorry, but I’m kinda not sorry.
The Beavers currently sit at 0-6, but my predictions are a mere 2-4. Just a coin flip away with the overtime loss to Houston.
Nik has the Beavers going 5-1. Looking into the Superstitious Statistician’s cauldron of predictions, I may or may not share his optimism. The cauldron shall clarify…
Vs Wake Forest University
Nik: Talk about a gift from the heavens, game one of five straight weeks at home. To start off against the Demon Deacons, much like App State, on paper this is a matchup the Beavs should win against Wake Forest that is, somehow, more lost than OSU this year. Beavs win their first game at home in over 320 days, 31-14.
Josh: The Demon Deacons are 3-2 as of this writing, being only 2 points away from a 4-1 record after their 30-29 defeat at the hands of then AP No. 16, Georgia Tech. The Demon Deacons have played only one road game this year, so I think the advantage goes to the Beavers and they win at Reser 24-20.
Vs Lafayette College
Nik: Do not let the record fool you, the Leopards have only had successful games against teams with poor football outputs. Much like the last game, back at home for the second week, OSU should have a handle on this one. Beavs win 34-13.
Josh: The Beavers then sit at 1-6 with the second match of the four-game homestand coming against Lafayette. The Bulldogs are 4-2, but have a very weak schedule, with wins against Georgetown, Columbia, Stonehill, and Fordham; their losses came at the hands of Princeton and Bowling Green. I will chalk this up as another win for the Beavers, 31-13. If there’s a blowout for the Beavers this year, here it (probably) is.
Vs Washington State University
Nik: Game one of the 2025 “Pac 2” championship series is played at Reser, and the defensive honeymoon period rudely ends for Bray’s unit. Like last year, the Cougars put up a heck of a fight. But in the end, OSU draws last blood as the Beavs win off the bye 37-35.
Josh: In the penultimate game of this home stretch, the Beavers play Washington State, who currently sits at 3-2. While the loss of John Mateer has severely affected the Cougs, their offensive staff is clever, and they happen to have one of the best-named RBs in college football. As per being the Superstitious Statistician, I reason that Kirby Vorhees will draw power from the Halloween holiday and power the Cougs to a win in Corvallis. Cougars win 31-29, Beavs fall to 2-7.
Vs Sam Houston State University
Nik: The Bearcats have a special place in the hearts of Beavernation, as they too sit with us in having the esteemed pleasure of being one of the worst D1 programs in the country. This could either be the greatest game of all time, or one of the worst, you decide, with a final score of 28-24, Beavers.
Josh: The Beavers play Sam Houston to conclude their four-game homestand. The Bearcats sit at 0-5 as of this writing and have not lost a game by fewer than 17 points. Because the Bearcat rushing game has 3.4 yards per carry on 124 rushing attempts, I will call this one for the Beavs as a 28-13 victory. Beavs improve to 3-7.
At University of Tulsa
Nik: The Beavers head to the Sooner state next, and face off against a Golden Hurricanes team that, say it with me, looks beatable on paper for the Beavs. Again, if all things go according to plan, OSU should head home victorious on the backs of a strong offensive look and their defense finding its rhythm again. Beavs win 38-22.
Josh: Finally, the Beavers conclude their 2025 campaign with two road games. Starting off at Tulsa, who sit at 2-4. With one of their wins coming over woeful Oklahoma State (1-3) at 19-12. The Cowboys faithful are as dedicated as any and the loss of Mike Gundy makes the win an impressive one. I reason that the Golden Hurricane make this game a close one in Tulsa, but the Beavs win 13-12 in a back-and-forth seesaw game, thusly improving to 4-7.
At Washington State University
Nik: For their final showing of 2025, the Beavs’ run comes to a halt. In a hostile Pullman environment, the “Pac 2” series ends in a draw. Beavs lose 17-28. And thus, mercifully, the Oregon State Beaver football team finishes their season with a 5-7 record.
Josh: The Beavers make their last stop of the 2025 campaign to battle the Cougs with a potential Pac-2 Title and bowl game on the line for both or either team. While the Cougs will have homefield advantage and everything to play for. The Beavers win 26-18 to finish 5-7.
Closing Thoughts
Nik: A lot would have to bounce the Beavers’ way for a possible bowl game appearance, yet I don’t see that happening. And thus, OSU shall be bowless for the second straight year.
And with that, the Trent Bray era comes to an end, with a 10-14 record and zero bowl appearances in two years. Leaving the big storyline ahead of the first season in the new PAC-12 conference next fall being: who will lead out this OSU squad, and who will be following behind them?
Josh: As for a potential post-season, I reason that Oregon State advances to play East Carolina in the Liberty Bowl. If there is a way for Trent Bray to save this season, this is how it happens.
As for the odds of all of these things coming together and the Beavers finishing with a Liberty Bowl victory? 13.13%, according to my cauldron of predictions, but only time will tell…
