With the Oregon State University men’s basketball team in 4th place in the West Coast Conference team rankings right now (13–13 overall, 6–7 in conference), it’s safe to say they’ve navigated a challenging 2025–26 season. With resilience, they’ve found their rhythm with sparse veteran leadership and fresh talent under head coach Wayne Tinkle.
Through 26 games as of late January, the Beavers have showcased a gritty, balanced attack, averaging 70.2 points per game while maintaining a stout defense that forces opponents into tough nights. With a roster rebuilt after offseason turnover, OSU’s campaign highlights efficient scoring, rebounding prowess, and timely adjustments, positioning them as a contender in a rugged conference landscape.
The Beavers’ statistical profile reflects a team finding its rhythm. They shoot 42.1% from the field overall, converting 465 of 603 free throws at a crisp 77.1% clip—a mark that has proven decisive in close contests. Rebounding stands out as a strength, with OSU grabbing 34.2 boards per game to opponents’ 38.2, creating second-chance opportunities and transition fuel. The team has notched 94 blocks and forced 310 turnovers against just 270 suffered, underscoring their growing defensive identity that Tinkle has hammered home.
Leading the charge is junior guard Josiah Lake II, who has emerged as the go-to scorer at 13.3 points per game. Lake’s efficiency jumps off the page: he’s shooting 49.3% from the floor across 26 appearances, while dishing 3.7 assists and pulling down 4.2 rebounds per outing. His ability to penetrate and create space for teammates has stabilized OSU’s half-court sets.
Flanking Lake are junior guards/forwards Dez White and Isaiah Sy, both averaging 9.7 points per game and providing spacing that opens driving lanes. White connects at 37.4% from the field with 2.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists. Sy mirrors that output, hitting 33.8% overall with 3.9 boards and 1.6 assists, his perimeter shooting stretching defenses thin.
Inside, big man Johan Munch delivers essential production at 7.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game over 24 outings, shooting 49.6% in the paint. His presence has fueled OSU’s rebounding edge and shot-blocking, with the Beavers swatting away attempts at a top-tier rate.
Press conferences this season reveal a coaching staff laser-focused on execution amid roster flux. Tinkle, entering his 11th year at OSU, addressed early non-conference hiccups and building momentum in his October 2025 preview: “We’ve talked again about building off last year—we won 20 games, we let a couple slip away down the stretch. I think we lost our focus just because of the landscape at that time. These guys want to build off that.”
In his December 2025 update on conference focus , Tinkle added: “Concentration, focus, and discipline to what we need to do to play as complete a game as we can is huge.”
After the November 2025 loss to the University of Oregon, Sy stressed toughness: “That’s definitely something that we got to change mentally, just like punch first and that was the game plan for today, and we didn’t do it… We got to start tomorrow at practice just being tougher and more disciplined in what we’re doing.”
Lake, on bouncing back from foul trouble in that game: “Even if you have a couple fouls, the next guy’s got to come in and play just as hard and just as intense.”
The Beavers’ schedule has tested their mettle so far, blending early confidence-builders with heavyweight tilts like Michigan State. Statistically, OSU’s assist-to-turnover ratio and free-throw dominance have cushioned losses, while wins showcase paint control, with Munch and company outscoring foes inside consistently.
Looking ahead, Tinkle’s vision centers on peaking for March as conference play intensifies: “I think the way we planned our schedule this preseason will go a long way into how we achieve things and become conference play… as we get healthy… we can figure into that top group for sure.”
The Beavers’ next home game will be against Pepperdine on Feb. 21.
