Oregon State baseball alum Travis Bazzana has now been active in the major leagues for a little over a week.
Since then, the Cleveland Guardians, who took him first overall in 2024 after calling him up from the minor league, have improved from an even win-loss record to a positive 21-19 to now head the American Central League.
Bazzana’s initial batting performance wouldn’t have you believing he has had much impact; his overall performance should give fans high hopes after his first few seasons were affected by injuries.
His first 12 batting appearances saw him go without a hit, but he was able to get on base three times with walks before acquiring his first official hit.
This was done on May 2, against the Athletics, scoring two RBI’s with it.
Since then, the Aussie has batted with an average of .182 with seven total runs, four RBI’s, and six stolen bases.
On the defensive side, there didn’t seem to be any falloff with having Bazzana in the infield. In his first nine games starting, he has only had one error with an otherwise near-perfect fielding percentage with 11 putouts, 21 assists, and three double plays.
Four of those stolen bases came within the span of two days, living up to one of his best attributes, which he displayed at Oregon State.
He even recently took a huge stride in his batting production. One that all followers had been waiting for, hitting his first MLB home run on May 8th. A three-run 427 rocket, which led the Guardians to a 6-4 victory.
So while more time will be needed to evaluate his performance truly, his biggest issue at the moment is for sure consistency at the plate.
However, there has been no loss in faith from his team staff, starting in every game so far since he’s been elevated.
For now, Bazzana has shown all the physical capabilities to perform at a high level in the league and has brought immediate change with him to the Guardians’ record, as he is just getting started in unlocking his potential.
