Outspoken to sing for moms and families

Spring term offers students a unique and memorable tradition. It isn’t about the students, and it isn’t about the faculty – it’s about the people behind the scenes, family.

“Mom’s and Family Weekend” is a lasting tradition at Oregon State. Dating back to 1924, with the first “Mom’s Weekend,” Oregon State has hosted a multitude of events for families and mothers alike to come enjoy the Corvallis community.

This year’s Mom’s and Family weekend will include a pair of concerts from Oregon State’s very own male a capella group, Outspoken.

The group is coming off a second place finish at last year’s International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA). Outspoken consists of 13 young men majoring in subjects ranging from music production to environmental engineering. Outspoken is excited to sing for the mothers and families coming to campus this weekend.

“This weekend is an Outspoken tradition and something we look forward to all year,” said music director of the group, Hunter Quon. “We usually get some big crowds and it’s our chance to really show what we have been working on all year to our friends and families who may not have had the opportunity to see us compete.”

Originally formed in 2003, Outspoken has been testing the limits of male a cappella music each and every year, with continuous success at the ICCA. Being in a top collegiate a cappella group is an experience not many get to enjoy, and this weekend is the men’s first opportunity to show off pieces of their new set and upcoming album.

“I like singing with this group because it’s a great way to share something we love to do with school and community, and apply ourselves to something in addition to school work,” Quon said. “We recorded an album over the year and are excited to release it by the end of the term so people can check us out and follow on social media.”

There will be two shows: one at 3 p.m. and another at 7 p.m. If you are interested, come on down to Milam Auditorium at one of those times and hear some award-winning a cappella music. There will be guest performances as well, featuring Divine all-female a cappella, and Powerchord co-ed a cappella.
