Editors note: Lilly Goodyear is the TV Station Manager for KBVR-TV, which is affiliated with Orange Media Network, alongside the Daily Barometer. Goodyear is also the acting chair of the OMN Advisory Board.
The Barometer is working to profile the rest of the candidates for both SFC Chair and Presidential tickets.
Lilly Goodyear is in the running to be the next chair of the Student Fee Committee to ensure the affordability of student fees and foster responsible budget recommendations.
The SFC is a committee independent of the Associated Students of Oregon State University, composed of six elected students tasked with making recommendations for the budgets of student fee-funded units. A ballot for the ASOSU 2025 elections was sent to all students by email and will close on Feb. 28.
Goodyear has been a part of ASOSU for a year, currently serving as the vice chair of the SFC. They are majoring in computer science and communications, with their sights set on a career in labor law.
As SFC Vice Chair, Goodyear said they sought to prevent a significant increase in student fees, as was seen with the $21.61 increase per term for the 2024-2025 academic year. For 2025-2026, the SFC recommended a 1.65% increase, amounting to an $8.69 each term.
“Being able to pay less money right now benefits every single student,” Goodyear said.
As a union member of the Communications Workers of America, Goodyear supports the ongoing efforts to establish a union for undergraduate student workers.
“We need an undergrad union, badly,” Goodyear said.
Goodyear said misconceptions about their stance on student wages and unions have circulated online.
”Everyone deserves a living wage, especially in the climate we’re going into, (where) eggs are $11, stuff is just going to increase,” Goodyear said.
However, Goodyear believes increasing the student wage for fee-funded units would be unfair to students who can’t take on a student job.
“My number one priority is figuring out how to benefit every single student on campus,” Goodyear said. “Students who are disabled (and) international students, they can’t work a student job, and so what benefits them is having funding to free programs like the BNC (Basic Needs Center).”
As SFC chair, Goodyear aims to continue to keep student fees affordable, “while being able to fully fund programs that benefit every student.”
Student tickets are another topic that sparked heated debates in this year’s SFC meetings. The committee determines how much funding is allocated to Recreational Sports, a fee-funded unit, to subsidize tickets.
Goodyear urged against OSU replicating the University of Oregon’s ticket system, where tickets haven’t been subsidized since 2021. Instead, UO students have the option of purchasing a $150 sports pass or single tickets, which cost between $10 and $30 for a football game.
“We should have as many student tickets as possible,” Goodyear said.
Goodyear also aims to facilitate responsible budgeting decisions, support sustainable initiatives, and increase communication between the student body, ASOSU and the administration.
“I’m here for the student body,” Goodyear said. “I want to make sure communication is as clear and smooth as possible and I have the experience.”
The Daily Barometer is working to finish profiling candidates, however, the Barometer has not gotten a response from SFC Chair candidate Dylan Perfect and Presidential candidates Mercedez Allen and Shantal Andrea Velazquez.
