The Center for Advocacy, Prevention & Education will host its Annual Denim Day Activity Fair on Wednesday, April 30, in support of Sexual Assault Awareness & Action Month.
The Activity Fair will celebrate National Denim Day, which began in 1999, and has occurred each April since. Hosted on the Memorial Union Quad, and free and open to students, the event will last from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Denim Days’ founding organization, Peace Over Violence, said that April 30th is observed with the intent “to practice solidarity and support survivors by renewing participants’ commitment to exposing harmful behaviors and attitudes surrounding sexual violence.”
Peace Over Violence is a sexual and domestic violence, intimate partner stalking, child abuse, and youth violence prevention center headquartered in Los Angeles.
The organization works on annual events such as this one and does individual field work with people in need, all seeking to serve their mission of “Building healthy relationships, families and communities free from sexual, domestic and interpersonal violence.”
According to Patricia Giggings, founder of Peace Over Violence, this year’s country-wide efforts are important because “Denim Day is the flagship of our sexual assault awareness and prevention programming. We celebrate, we participate, we educate, and we advocate on Denim Day–a single day that symbolizes the continued outreach and prevention services and launches our year-round programming. Denim Day is a campaign, a project, and a program!”
This year, OSU welcomes its students and community to participate in this effort by wearing denim on Wednesday, April 30. The fair will feature several booths with games and educational opportunities, prizes, and a photo booth setup.
OSU events hosts this Activity Fair with the hope that “People worldwide participate by wearing denim to raise awareness and promote dialogue about consent and sexual assault, making Denim Day a powerful platform for activism rooted in challenging harmful societal norms.”
For more information on this free event, visit the CAPE’s Instagram page or check out the Activity Fair tomorrow, Wednesday, starting at 11 a.m. To show support, community members can wear denim throughout the day.
