The Board of Trustees successfully carried a motion to construct a new student resident hall in a meeting on July 8.
In addition to a new dorm, an off site dining center will be built, all with a budget of $189.9 million.
The board said that starting early August, work will begin such as sourcing materials and setting up sites. The university will also submit plans to the city. Building is set to start in spring of 2026, with a grand opening fall 2027, if all goes as planned.
Concerns presented by trustees included parking needs and the possibility of new tariffs may restrict the availability of materials as well as increased prices, causing the project to cost more than what is budgeted.
In order to combat oncoming parking issues by adding a 16th residence hall to campus, the university plans to demolish Adams Hall, the Cascades Annex and a group custodial home nearby the construction sites to provide additional space for a parking lot.
When presented with questions from attendees about the impact that tariffs could have on the inquisition of materials, Trustee Toby Luther assured that materials would be bought quickly and in bulk to maximize price advantages and to avoid the possibility of new tariffs or needing to find replacement suppliers.
