Oregon State University’s Bike and Scooter Share pilot program has been extended to January 2026 to ensure continuous service while the micromobility project team determines next steps.
In its first year, from Aug. 1, 2024 to July 14, the program’s Veo bikes have provided 175,160 total rides, 235,679 total ride miles and 1,395,800 total riding minutes.
The Veo program began as a collaboration between Associated Students of OSU and Transportation Services, who make up the micromobility project team. Their goal was to provide a sustainable transportation option for OSU students, employees and visitors.
The Bike and Scooter Share program began in August 2024 and has grown to play an important role in transportation around campus and throughout Corvallis.
Aurea Willis, a fourth-year education major who frequently uses Veo, said that it’s one of the first modes of transportation she considers when she needs to go somewhere.
“As a student, Veo has helped me in numerous ways,” Willis wrote in an email. “A lot of times during the week, I have only 10 minutes to run an errand. Without Veo, I wouldn’t be able to quickly get things done. But with these scooters I can make use of all the time in my day.”
Willis has a car of her own but views the scooters as a way to lessen her greenhouse gas emissions. “Anytime I can use them instead of my car, I do!”
Alex Leach, a fourth-year electrical and computer engineering student, also owns a car and uses the shared bikes and scooters. Through email, Leach said that he sees Veo as an “amazing alternative to campus transportation.” He no longer worries about securing a bike every trip or being limited to walking on campus.
Transportation Services’ Outreach Coordinator Sara Hamilton reported that the micromobility project team’s mid-year evaluation showed that 74% of riders surveyed by Veo said that they were able to reduce their car travel due to the availability of shared bikes and scooters in their area.
“Strong ridership levels throughout the year indicate that the shared vehicles are meeting a need and helping people get where they need to go,” Hamilton stated in an email.
When Veo first launched, rides were limited to OSU’s campus, but the micromobility team has expanded boundaries to off-campus sites around Corvallis since then.
They identified areas with insufficient bike or scooter parking distribution and adjusted the service area to prevent riders from becoming stranded far from a parking spot. Hamilton stated that this experience guided the team to initiate their second expansion in March 2025 to include Witham Hill apartments.
“If there are future changes to the service area,” Hamilton added, “the project team will share an announcement on the Bike and Scooter Share webpage.”
While there may have been an initial learning curve for the micromobility team and riders when the program started, there are ongoing efforts to educate riders and distribute helmets through campus collaborators like the Student Health Center. Hamilton said that “in August, the project team will compile a full year of data to further assess the pilot.”
Both Willis and Leach expressed hope that this ride sharing system becomes a lasting hit.
Veo has been “a significant help to getting around campus and Corvallis with its large volume of electric scooters that are usually available and kept in great condition,” Leach said. He said that he uses Veo roughly one to three times a week and has subscribed to the Veo Plus membership which lowers the overall cost of frequent rentals.
Willis said that she uses Veo around 10 times a week or at least once a day. “The range of where you can go using them is so convenient for people who need some way of transportation other than walking or bus.”
The six-month extension provides additional time for pilot evaluation while the program continues to service rides. If a shared micromobility program is planned beyond January 2026, OSU will issue a formal request for proposals to select a long-term provider.
