The National Weather Service has issued an “extreme heat warning” for the Corvallis area in effect from 11 a.m. on Friday through 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
This warning extends beyond Corvallis, impacting the Portland metro area, the central and southern Willamette Valley, the Columbia River Gorge as well as the foothills of the northern and central Oregon Cascades, according to the NWS.
Temperatures between 96 degrees and 103 degrees are expected, with Friday and Saturday being the hottest days, according to the NWS.
According to the NSW, dangerously hot temperatures can result in heat related illnesses, especially for those spending time outdoors or without adequate cooling.
If you think that someone is experiencing heatstroke, call 911. The National Health Service recommends in the meantime, getting the person indoors or in the shade, removing excessive clothing, cooling their skin and getting them a drink to rehydrate.
To stay safe in the heat, the Red Cross recommends staying in in-door air conditioned areas, limiting strenuous outdoor activities to the morning and evening, drinking plenty of fluids even when you aren’t thirsty, and wearing loose and lightweight clothing.
