Editor’s note: This article has been updated to reflect the correct winter term billing dates.
Navigating fall term bills at Oregon State University for the first time can be intimidating, as noted by Student Account Services. Luckily, there’s several departments within OSU with people eager to help.
Sept. 24 is when fall term begins formally at OSU. Your bill will generally be posted in the following month on the 5th, Oct. 5 in this example.
This is notably unaffected by how late into a month a term will start. For example, winter term this academic year will begin on Jan. 5, and the bill will be posted on Jan. 5.
Hopping back into fall, Oct. 5 is when your bill is posted, and it is due on the first of the next month, November. This also applies to winter, with the bill being due on Feb. 1.
The late fee for having an overdue bill past this point is $85, which is charged once per term. That is equivalent to four large (14”) cheese pizzas from Domino’s, with about $5 left over for a bottle of water.
If the overdue bill is above $500, then a registration hold might be placed, which prevents you from registering for the next term’s classes.
“Two weeks before we actually place holds, we send an email that says ‘hey, you could be having a hold come up in two weeks. So please make sure you look at your account, resolve the balance or contact our offices,” Greg Balck, student accounts receivable manager, said in an interview.
“Then we send an actual registration hold warning the next week, and then the actual week we actually place the holds,” he continued. “So we will have sent three communications to the students before we actually place the hold.”
Paying your bill can be done in a few ways, Balck goes over them and their fees, “If (through) the portal; mybill.oregonstate.edu if they use an electronic check, that’s free, there is no cost (referring to fees). If they do a credit card or a debit card, there’s a 1% transaction fee of the amount of the transaction.”
Authorized users can also pay directly from this portal, with the option to send in a physical check if they are not authorized for whatever reason.
These bills can get very expensive, with high tuition cost and fees. The matriculation fee, for example, is $418. If you are new to OSU, this is a mandatory, one time fee according to Balck.
Payment plans allow students to pay a down payment on their bill, and the remaining balance is paid in monthly installments in varying amounts, depending on the chosen plan.
Signing up for a payment plan includes a $15 registration fee, but waives the late fee and any bill-based registration holds.
“The one thing that I would add: check your OSU email.” Balck said regarding big tips. Services, such as the registrar’s office, contact students exclusively through email with time-sensitive and important information.
Balck also affirmed they have drop in hours daily on zoom for any student accounts or billing questions.
