The student government Senate unanimously passed an election packet Wednesday for the special election to elect a new Student Fee Committee chair.
According to the packet, candidate registration will begin Dec. 1 and continue until Dec. 3, the same day the ballot opens. The ballot will close on Dec. 10, at noon.
“The SFC chair presides over and facilitates meetings of the ASOSU Student Fee Committee,” the packet said about the position. “The Student Fee Committee is a committee of elected students and unit liaisons who oversee the budgeting process for the entirety of student fees.”
The SFC has been without a chair since August when Dylan Perfect was terminated from the position.
In response, the Senate was forced to pass a bill with emergency statutes that allowed the current SFC Vice Chair Saegis Abbott to act as the chair until one is elected.
Student Government Advisor Keri Simonet voiced her concerns that the time period for campaigning was too slim.
“The SFC chair is an incredibly important position, and to have one day to register, then have that close after one day, then have one week to campaign while the ballot is open, during finals week… I do have a lot of concerns about that,” Simonet said.
Simonet also said she didn’t feel like the student government was setting candidates up for success.
“With regards to these elections, and having the new SFC chair begin and jump immediately into the fee deliberations, I think is gonna be incredibly difficult, for any students that might be coming in that haven’t been trained with the SFC,” Simonet said.
Senator Emma Bowädt, who is also on the Elections Committee that put the packet together, said the EC came together at the last minute, but having the election before the winter break would give the electee time to prepare for their roll.
Bowädt also pointed out that it is quite possible someone from the SFC will get elected to the position.
For those interested in campaigning for the position of SFC chair, the packet said to visit the asosu.oregonstate.edu website, visit the “Elections” page, click on “Candidate Registration” and fill out the form.
Candidates must also attend or watch an ASOSU Elections Informational Session prior to campaigning.
